Keeping Traffic On The Move

Singapore is an ideal place to find out how transport networks have adapted to the needs of people in a small but densely populated city.

With a land area of slightly over 600sq km and a population of 3 million, it is essential that land is utilised to maximise efficiency and that infrastructure development such as transportation networks be as economical of space as possible.

This need is very carefully enforced by the Government which attempts to reduce the number of private cars on the roads and encourages maximum use of public transport. Although the Government imposes constraints on the ownership and usage of private cars, it also provides an efficient and integrated system of public transport - a Mass Rapid Transit, public buses and taxis.

Various measures such as vehicle taxes, fuel taxes, parking charges, an Area Licensing Scheme and the Vehicle Quota System have been implemented to regulate the growth and usage of vehicles. In addition, fiscal disincentives and compulsory vehicle inspection encourage a younger and more roadworthy fleet of vehicles on the roads.

With restrictions on private vehicles, many Singaporeans rely on public transport, made convenient by an integrated fare system.

In the pipeline are light rail systems to serve as feeder services within satellite towns, and electronic road pricing has been implemented to keep traffic flowing on the roads.

Come to Singapore and you will be moved to see schemes and systems that effectively manage to control the problem of vehicular traffic congestion that plague many cities.

UPBOUND organises the Learning Partnership programme to share the Singapore Experience with overseas visitors who see Singapore as a learning model. This study tour programme is customised to meet the specific interests of individual organisations.
